Train passengers face major disruption until the end of the week as Glasgow Central will be closed until Sunday.

Low level services at the station have resumed, but the high level station – which included cross-border services – will not reopen this week.

A major fire at a vape shop near the city station gutted several buildings. The station was closed and trains have been cancelled since Sunday.

Network Rail said: “due to the high level of instability of the building façade on Gordon Street and the required building assessment work that needs to be undertaken, Glasgow Central High Level station will not reopen this week.

“We must wait until Scottish Fire and Rescue Services and Glasgow City Council have completed their critical work to determine the safety of the Union Corner site.

“When this work has concluded, our team will be able to undertake the structural assessment work that is needed to determine if there has been any damage to the station.

“We will continue to work with Glasgow City Council and Scottish Fire and Rescue Services to develop a plan to reopen the station when it is safe to do so for trains and passengers.”

Avanti West Coast

With no trains able to run to/from Glasgow Central high level, Avanti West Coast trains will start and end at Motherwell, which you can reach using ScotRail services from Glasgow Central low level or nearby stations.

The majority of trains between Scotland and London are able to run normally to/from Motherwell and Edinburgh.

What are my ticket options?

  • Connections to Motherwell are available with ScotRail. You can use your existing ticket at no extra cost from Glasgow Central low level, or the neighbouring stations of Anderston and Argyle Street, to catch a direct train to Motherwell. From there, Avanti West Coast trains are running to / from London Euston. Please allow extra time for your journey and check before you travel
  • You can also use your existing ticket at no extra cost on ScotRail services between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh, with onward journeys available from Edinburgh with Avanti West Coast, LNER, TransPennine Express and CrossCountry
  • Avanti West Coast tickets dated between 8 and 15 March can be used at no extra cost on any Avanti West Coast service on the same route until the end of Sunday 15 March

No longer wish to travel? Due to the disruption, your unused ticket is eligible for a full refund (no admin fee). Claim your refund from where you bought your ticket.

TransPennine Express

ransPennine Express services WILL NOT operate on the following routes in both directions on Wednesday 11 March. We will provide an update as soon as we have further information regarding services for the rest of the week:

  • Glasgow Central to Carlisle

Most Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport and Liverpool Lime Street services will either terminate or start at Carlisle. Please check your journey before you travel.

Train crew in Glasgow may be displaced due to the incident. TransPennine Express advise that you check your journey before you travel on the following routes until further notice, as short notice delays and cancellations are expected:

  • Edinburgh to Manchester Airport
  • Edinburgh to Newcastle

We will provide an update on how long this disruption is likely to last as soon as more information becomes available. In the meantime, please continue to check before you travel until further notice.

What should I do?

TransPennine Express will not be operating between Carlisle and Glasgow Central in both directions whilst Glasgow Central high level station is closed.

Connections to Motherwell are available with ScotRail. You can use your existing ticket at no extra cost from Argyle Street station (a short distance from Glasgow Central) to catch a direct train to Motherwell. From there, Avanti West Coast are running to and from London. Customers can change at Preston for TransPennine Express or Northern services towards Manchester.

Please allow extra time for your journey and check before you travel.

You can use your ticket at no extra cost on the following services:

  • Avanti West Coast between Edinburgh / Motherwell and Preston
  • Northern between Preston and Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Airport
  • ScotRail services between Edinburgh and Glasgow Queen Street (with onward journeys available from Edinburgh with Avanti West Coast, LNER and CrossCountry)
  • TransPennine Express services between Edinburgh and Preston / Manchester Airport

If you have purchased a ticket and your journey has been affected by this disruption, you can use your ticket dated from Monday 9 to Wednesday 11 March to travel instead on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 March at no extra cost. Alternatively, if the train you intended to travel on is cancelled or you are unable to complete your journey then you can apply for a refund from your point of purchase.
