It seems incredible, approaching the business end of the season, there are no senior games of rugby union in the county this weekend.
The lack of continuity in fixtures is one of the main reasons players and referees find other things to do at weekends.
The Six Nations have already interrupted fixtures, under scoring a commonly held view that the RFU think more of the international game than they do of grassroots.
Spare a thought for the Cockermouth club who have played only one home game since Christmas on February 7 – although last week’s blank date was caused by Penrith 2nds being unable to field sufficient players.
It will be interesting to see what happens about the RFU’s forthcoming meeting to discuss the future of the game when they will be looking for clubs to vote on two resolutions.
The Special General Meeting (SGM) of the Rugby Football Union will be held at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham on Friday April 24 2026 at 5.30pm.
As with previous general meetings, this one will be held on a hybrid basis, so members can attend either in person or online.
It’s the future of rugby in Cumbria that should be in the forefront of minds of county clubs with decisions made that secure the future of the game in Cumbria even if it means a different League set-up, different to RFU guidelines.
Another much larger county body did different to the RFU several seasons ago and are still doing so.
The only two games on Saturday are – Cumbria Ladies trial at Penrith (Gerry Garvey); Kirkby Lonsdale Development v Liverpool St Helens 2nds (Kieran Trainor).
On Sunday – Senior Colts: Kendal v Fylde (Martin Maughan); Upper Eden Ladies v Redcar Women (George Tressider).
