
A private family collection of artwork by Percy Kelly, a large Wally Bird owl jar and sparkling diamond jewellery are just some of the highlights among over 1,400 lots in Mitchells Antiques & Fine Art Sale this month.
The sale takes place from March 18 to March 20 at the firm’s Cockermouth saleroom.
Jewellery

The most valuable lot in the sale is expected to be an 18ct white gold diamond tennis bracelet, with a total diamond weight of 16.17 carats which is likely to sell for £20,000 to £25,000.

Other highlights among the jewellery include an 18ct gold stamped 750 foliate bracelet with a gross weight of 50g and measuring 19.5cm in length which has an estimate of £2,500 to £3,000.

There is also a Hearts on Fire diamond and platinum engagement ring valued at £1,500 to £2,000.
Artwork

A private collection of 11 artworks by the celebrated Workington-born artist Percy Kelly (1918-1993) belonging to the artist’s family are also for sale.
These include a large watercolour depicting a coastal scene, possibly Pembrokeshire, signed and dated 1976 and measuring 117cm x 50cm, with an estimate of £2,500 to £3,000 and a watercolour of a church with gravestones and sunset valued at £700 to £1,000.
With estimates ranging from £100 to £5,000, the collection also includes an artist’s proof of Newlands Valley and another artwork depicting dark cottage roofs.
Other notable paintings for sale are four landscapes by renowned West Cumbrian artist Len Roope (1917-2005) including the watercolour Morning Sky (Hopegill Head and The Lorton Vale), signed and dated 1974 and measuring 17.5cm x 29.5cm framed and mounted, which is expected to sell for £120 to £180.

Furnishings

Highlights among the furnishings include a19th century Swiss Black Forest bear hall table/valet, with a carved top and two seated bears sat on top of hinged boxes, a small brass bowl above a central standing bear with tree trunk and a hinged head.
Measuring 88 cm in height, the hall table is estimated at £800 to £1,200.
An oak Arts & Crafts hall wardrobe, with an open section and two copper panels to either side, Arts & Crafts hinges and measuring 191cm in height is expected to sell for £300 to £500.

Other valuable furnishings include a large pair of mahogany and brass bound peat buckets, each with liner and loop handle, measuring 53cm high which have an estimate of £1,500 to £2,000.
Ceramics

Highlights among the ceramics include a large lidded Wally Bird jar and cover, The Major, formed as an owl and measuring 40cm high.
Designed by Andrew Hull and marked to the base Cobridge Stoneware, the jar is expected to sell for £400 to £600.
A large signed Emma Bossons for Moorcroft floor standing vase in the Montagnac pattern measuring 62cm high, limited edition 69/100 and dated 2000, is estimated at £600 to £800.
When does Mitchells Antiques & Fine Art Sale take place?
Day one of the three-day sale on Wednesday March 18 will include Asian art, ceramics & glassware, coins, jewellery & pocket watches, silver & allied wares.
Day two of the sale, on Thursday March 19, will include paintings, drawings & prints, objects of art, collectors’ items, metalware and textiles.
Day three of the sale on Friday March 20 will include table boxes, wall clocks, barometers & mirrors, furniture, longcase clocks, dining tables and chairs.
