A man has been jailed for crimes including assault and strangulation.
Jamie Pitt, 33, of no fixed address, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court. He was due to go on trial, but admitted on the first day of his trial to assault by beating and on-fatal strangulation.
Pitt pleaded guilty to criminal damage and witness intimidation at an earlier hearing.
He was jailed for a year and 10 months and also given a restraining order.
The court heard that police received a dropped 999 call from the victim.
Pitt had entered her property before leaving. Police attended and made sure the property was secure.
Pitt returned to the address while the victim was on the phone to a friend and forced entry through a window.
The victim attempted to escape but Pitt grabbed the victim and strangled her twice. She almost blacked out.
While strangling her, Pitt said he would kill her.
Pitt also tried to pour water down her throat.
Her friend was on the phone throughout and called the police.
The victim managed to escape in her vehicle, but Pitt threw a chair at it, causing damage to a windscreen.
While remanded in custody, Pitt called the victim from a withheld number and made threats.
A further 11 calls were also received by the victim which she did not answer.
Detective Constable Anna Pickthall, of Cumberland CID, said: “Pitt is a dangerous offender who intentionally strangled the victim twice almost causing her to black out leaving her in fear of her life.
“He also attempted to intimidate the victim from prison making multiple calls and making contact through family and sending gifts.
“I would encourage anyone who has been subject to offences of this nature to come forward so that our officers can investigate. You will be supported throughout our investigation.”
