An unexpected sinkhole that has appeared on a north Cumbrian road will mean it is closed until further notice.
Cumberland Council is carrying out resurfacing work on Scotby Road in Scotby, near Carlisle.
Originally planned as overnight work, the authority said the sinkhole developed in the working area underneath the railway bridge due to water ingress.
The road was already closed to allow the resurfacing work to take place.
The council added: “However, due to this unforeseen issue, the closure will now need to remain in place until further notice to protect the public, including outside of working hours, while further investigations and repairs are carried out.”
The closure extends from the Park Road junction through to the Lambley Bank junction.
The existing pavement remains open for pedestrians and for dismounted cyclists.
Further assessments will be carried out with specialist engineers to review the situation and update the programme of work, the council said.
It added it would continue to monitor the situation closely.
