Workington Reds reached the Fred Conway County Cup final with a 5-0 win over Westmorland League leaders Kirkoswald.

They will meet the holders Carlisle City at a date and venue still to be announced.

It was comfortable in the end but Kirkoswald proved gritty, durable opponents for an hour before the floodgates opened.

Reds only led 1-0 at half-time and in that first period Kirkoswald missed a couple of good chances with one cleared off the line and another from Jake Holden thumping the crossbar.

Reds had taken the lead on 10 minutes when Josh Palmer was on hand at the far post for a simple tap in from the right wing cross.

Workington fielded a mixed side with Cieran Casson, Jordan Little and Jake Allan the only ones from the starting line-up at Hyde on Saturday.

But members of the bench at Hyde – Keelan Leslie, Dan Hopper, Josh Galloway and Tom Stephenson were all starters.

So too was Dav Symington who had a valuable 62 minutes on the field before he was replaced while Charlie Barnes did 90 minutes after returning from suspension.

Reds used all five substitutes including 41-year-old assistant manager Lee Andrews who came on to add to his 200-plus appearances for the club.

The second goal, which gave Reds initial breathing space came on thre hour when a corner wasn’t properly cleared and Hopper drilled it home into the bottom corner.

It was a short corner routine on 73 minutes which provided Hopper with the chance to shoot and his well directed effort found the net.

Four minutes later Palmer went through and clinically beat keeper Kylan Strand with a well-placed finish.

It was Palmer who completed the scoring with the fifth Reds goal, and his own hat-trick. Although Strand saved his initial header the young striker reacted quickly to head home.
