A structural defect found on Carlisle’s Irish Gate footbridge has prompted its closure.
A routine inspection of the bridge, also known as the Millennium Bridge, identified a crack in one of the steel components that supports its deck.
Cumberland Council said while the footbridge was currently closed, there was no risk to users of Castle Way, and the road below remained fully open.
The authority added: “Specialist engineers will now carry out detailed investigations to understand the extent of the issue and determine the most appropriate next steps.
“It is too early to provide a reopening timescale, but public safety remains the council’s priority throughout.
“Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available, and the council appreciates the public’s patience while this work takes place.”
