Roadworks in Cockermouth town centre have been delayed.

DSD Construction Limited is carrying out work on Lorton Street on behalf of Cumberland Council.

The authority said it was an ambitious project.

Due to engineering difficulties with the construction of the new road surface, work will now continue until the middle of next month.

The road will be closed. During this time three-way temporary traffic lights at Kirkgate and Market Place junction will remain in place to help to ease any congestion.

There will remain no access for any vehicles, including emergency services.

Traffic marshals who will always be on site during the work to help when they can.

Cumberland Council said it recognised that the road was a key route through the town, and some temporary inconvenience is occurring during the work.

It added: “The council is working closely with local stakeholders, including parish councils and local members, to reduce disruption as much as possible.”
