Five people have been arrested in connection with an early hours assault of a man in Carlisle.

Police said they were continuing to investigate the incident on Edward Street, which happened at around 3.25am on Sunday.

Officers were told that a man in his 30s had sustained a number of suspected stab wounds.

He was taken to hospital and subsequently discharged following treatment.

Cumbria police said their investigations have led to five people being arrested.

They were:

  • Two men, one in his 20s and one in his 40s, who were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. They remain in custody today.
  • Two women, one in her 40s and one in her 30s, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They remain in custody today.
  • A man, in his 20s, arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent. He was bailed pending further enquiries.

Police are appealing for anyone to contact them who saw anything suspicious in the area of Edward Street, Sybil Street and Lindisfarne Street on the night on Saturday March 28 or the early hours of Sunday March 29.

They are also keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a grey Seat Arona, registration number PY23 OES, in and around these areas or the London Road area at these times.

A police operation was carried out yesterday that led to the arrests.

The operation involved arrest inquiries being carried out a number of addresses in the city. As a result, residents may have noticed a larger-than-usual police presence.

Armed police were deployed as a precaution due to the nature of the assault.

Anyone with information can contact police on 101, referring to log 31 of March 29.
