Workington Comets legend Carl Stonehewer is to do his bit for the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund.
The number one rider at Derwent Park for nine years is taking to four wheels with his best pal at the end of the season for a new challenge.
Nick Sharples was his mechanic for a long time during his racing career and the pair are teaming up to complete the Skinflint Rally in September. It is not a race but an endurance driving challenge.
Carl, along with Nick, attended the Ben Find Bonanza meeting in Glasgow on Saturday night where the challenge was officially announced.
He said: “The challenge is buying a car for under £500, and then trying to complete the rally – a trip to Nice in the South of France via Italy over three days.
“There’s lots of challenges to do along the way and we are both hoping we can make an impression on our first attempt.
“We got ourselves a nifty little car for under £500. It got us to Glasgow and back safely and only broke down once!
“We are working on social media sites, but the pair of us aren’t tech savvy, but it would be cool if someone could help us do that so we could live stream inside the car.
“I have benefited from the SRBF many times over my career, and this trip is my pay back to the fund.
“To do this challenge with my best mate will be awesome and we can’t wait to do it.
“All help would be greatly appreciated in any way, shape or form. We are selling sticker spaces on the car from £100 depending on size, and every penny donated goes into the SRBF account.
“Smaller donations can be made when we sort out our page.”
