Two men have appeared in court accused of attempting to murder a man alleged to have been stabbed to the head, face and body in Carlisle over the weekend.
Cumbria police say they were made aware at around 3.25am on Sunday, March 29 that a man, in his 30s, had sustained a number of suspected stab wounds.
The incident was reported to have happened at an address in Edward Street, which runs parallel to London Road.
Officers made five arrests in the aftermath and, as they launched an investigation, made an appeal for witnesses and information.
Two men appeared at Carlisle Magistrates’ Court today.
Alex Steventon, 46, and 29-year-old Connor Challinor, are jointly accused of attempting to murder the man on Sunday.
During a seven-minute court hearing, a prosecutor gave a brief outline of the incident and alleged that the man had been stabbed multiple times — to the head, face and body — and suffered serious injuries.
A Cumbria police spokesman said yesterday that the man had been treated in hospital and later discharged.
Steventon and Challinor appeared side-by-side in the court dock, flanked by security staff members.
Both spoke to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses.
Neither man was asked to indicate a plea to the attempted murder charge, which is classed as indictable only and so serious that it must be dealt with at a crown court.
A bench of three magistrates formally sent the case to Carlisle Crown Court.
Steventon, of Denton Street, and Challinor, who gave his address as Sybil Street, are next due to appear in front of a judge at the crown court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on May 1.
In the meantime both men have been remanded in custody. No bail applications were made by their respective solicitors.
- Two women, one in her 40s and one in her 30s, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender have both been released on police bail. A man, in his 20s, arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent, was bailed pending further enquiries.
