A driver who used racist words and then tried to headbutt a police officer after he was arrested has been fined.
Daniel Kenneth Kerr, 38, was the subject of a 999 call from a member of the public, in the Houghton area, north of Carlisle, just after 9pm on Wednesday December 17.
Kerr was seen driving erratically, resulting in him being stopped and spoken to by police.
As officers were dealing with Kerr he became angry and aggressive. He used a number of racist words and called the police sausages, said a prosecutor.
Kerr was handcuffed due to his aggression and taken to the floor. Later, while at a police station custody desk, Kerr continued to be abusive.
He turned his head and tried to headbutt a PC, who was able to take evasive action.
Kerr was taken to the ground. In a statement, the officer spoke of enjoying his job and being proud to serve the community.
“I do not, however, come to work to be assaulted,” he said.
In court Kerr, of Stanley Road, Brampton, admitted assaulting a police constable and a using abusive words which were racially aggravated.
He apologised thoroughly and absolutely for what he had done, and had panicked.
Magistrates imposed fines totalling £200. Kerr must also pay £85 costs and an £80 surcharge.
