Cumberland Council has been officially awarded sanctuary status.
The Council of Sanctuary status is awarded to councils who take the right steps to support people seeking sanctuary – including refugees, asylum seekers, immigrants, those fleeing domestic or other abuse, and those moving here from elsewhere in the UK.
It recognises the council’s dedication to supporting people fleeing conflict, persecution, abuse and hardship and creating inclusive and supportive environments for all residents.
The council’s aim to become a place of sanctuary has been the subject of strong objections since it announced the plans in November.
It has been the subject of multiple heated debates and a petition was also lodged objecting to the status.
The status has been awarded to Cumberland Council by the national City of Sanctuary movement.
Councillor Lisa Hinton, executive member for adult social care and statutory deputy leader, said: “Becoming a Council of Sanctuary is a very proud moment for us, and it speaks volumes about the strength, generosity, and resilience of our people.
“Everyone here – whether newly arrived or born-and-bred – should feel safe, supported, and part of a caring community.”
The council said its commitment to welcoming people includes:
- Inclusive services: Ensuring access to health, education, housing, and employment for everyone
- Language support: Providing English lessons and informal ‘English Cafés’ to help people integrate and connect
- Safe accommodation: Working with partners to offer secure housing and support
- Community engagement: Supporting local events and campaigns to foster understanding and unity
Councillor Hinton added: “This work involves our entire community. We have always approached this as a wide partnership and we recognise the contribution of all the organisations and residents who help welcome people and make sure that, as a community, we reach our full potential.”
The council added that it offers support to everyone who may be fleeing to the area, including victims of domestic abuse.
The Cumberland Domestic and Sexual Abuse Group works with the council to ensure those who have experienced abuse are supported at every level.
Councillor Hinton added: “This is not just a document, it’s a promise. We will keep listening, learning, and acting to ensure Cumberland remains a place of safety, opportunity, and hope for all.”
