A new community running club in Cumbria is proving that you don’t have to be fast or fit to take part.
SRC launched in Kendal in January and is designed for “normal people”- those who struggle with motivation, feel out of place in traditional running clubs, or just want a more relaxed and honest approach to getting active.
Instead of focusing on pace, performance, or personal bests, SRC is built around a simple idea: turning up is enough.
“We’re not about being the fastest or the fittest,” said founder Shaun Fagan. “We’re about showing up. Some runs feel great – a lot don’t. That’s normal. We wanted to create something where people could be honest about that and still feel part of a community.”
The club organises informal group runs and meet-ups aimed at making running feel accessible and pressure-free. It’s already attracting people who may have previously avoided running altogether, as well as those returning after time away.
With a focus on physical activity, mental and social wellbeing, SRC offers a supportive environment where people can connect, get outside, and build consistency without judgement.
Early interest has been strong, with runners drawn to the club’s down-to-earth message and inclusive atmosphere.
Shaun said: “If you’ve ever struggled to get out the door, felt like you’re not good enough, or had a run that felt rubbish – you’re exactly who this is for.”
There are ambitions to expand across Cumbria and beyond, creating a wider network of clubs that keep the same no-pressure ethos.
