Plans for a 239-space car park at Carlisle Railway Station have been given the go-ahead.
The plans – which also include upgrades to the area surrounding the station, are part of the £40.5 million Carlisle Station Gateway Project and have been approved by Cumberland Council’s planning committee.
The Station Road Business Park site will be redeveloped to create the car park, which will serve as the main parking facility for the station.
The site previously contained a number of now‑demolished buildings including the former Pools building and a retail unit.
It is immediately south of Citadel Station and Carlisle city centre, bordered by Water Street, James Street and the Victoria Viaduct.
The Carlisle Station Gateway Project is supported by £27 million from the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal, funded by the UK and Scottish governments.
In December, further funding of £13.5 million was allocated by the Department for Transport to Network Rail as a capped contribution to the partnership project with Cumberland Council.
Leader of Cumberland Council Mark Fryer said: “This is a really positive step forward for one of the most important regeneration projects in Carlisle.
“The gateway scheme is about far more than bricks and mortar, it is about making first impressions count, improving accessibility and creating a place that works better for everyone.
“By regenerating previously developed land and investing in high‑quality public spaces and facilities, we are helping to support economic growth, encourage sustainable travel and make Carlisle a more welcoming city for residents, businesses and visitors alike.
“I am delighted to see these plans approved and look forward to the next stages of delivery.”
The Carlisle Station Gateway Project is delivered by Cumberland Council and Network Rail.
