Sun shines on hounds at West Woodburn

Tuesday night was sunny and bright for a four grade meeting at West Woodburn where reigning senior champion Silver Dream added another win to her growing collection.

There were 48 entered across the four races and Silver Dream was among 11 who were entered for the senior opener.

After roughly three minutes running Sarah and Baz Harper and the late Hartley Robinson’s Delta Fortune, last season’s puppy champion, was leading ahead of Silver Dream and Graham Reid’s Money Talks.

Reports from the first road crossing informed spectators that Silver Dream was now leading from Martin, Molly and Teddy Burrow and Sarah Jackson’s Thorn Soul and Money Talks.

Once they came back into sight after roughly 23 minutes running Silver Dream and Thorn Soul had established an advantage over Money Talks and Delta Fortune.

However Money Talks and Delta Fortune ran off, putting themselves out of the race.

Once they appeared onto the finish Silver Dream knew where the line was and won well from Thorn Soul with Jim, Ann, Alan and Adrian Little’s Huntsman’s Quantum coming from off the pace for third, a good run for a veteran hound.

Another veteran hound Willie and Craig Mark’s Summer Spirit was fourth ahead of Jenny Horn’s Spring Return and Lee, Hayley, Joey and George Wall, Sandra Mordue and Ted Strorrow’s Denton Phantom.

The puppy race had a line up of 12, and Martin and Molly Burrow, Ian Freyne Ger and Jennifer Kenneally’s Thorn Daisy was an early leader setting a good pace.

Nicola McMaster and Silver Dream.

Due to the sun setting and shining on the field the hounds were hard to make out as they were going away so all that could be seen was a line of hounds racing on well.

Once they headed back into the final dip five had broken clear and had an advantage on the chasing hounds.

When they appeared on the finish Thorn Daisy produced a nice turn of foot to win from littermate, Nicola McMaster and Barbara Telford’s Rodney Ranger and his kennel mate Darren and Julie McMaster and Sadie Wilson’s Tartan Raider.

Paul Airey, Joanne, Lauren and Sophie Hodgson’s Meadow Bonnie finished fourth and Duncan, Amy, Oliver, Liam, Eleanor Chisholm, Harry Turner and Brian Graham’s Let Me Try Again was next ahead of Anna and Kerry Lindsay and Janie McAulay’s Zinger.

The biggest field was for the Open Maidens with a slip of 21 and once away Anna and Kerry Lindsay and Emmie McAulay’s pair of Inspect and Discover were leading ahead of George Burgon and Carole Logan’s Mr Mally.

Joanna Burrow and Thorn Daisy.

Once they dropped into the dip the same three hounds were still prominent but had been joined by Malcolm Holmes’ Senorita.

On the finish Senorita was still leading but was denied the win by fast-finishing Inspect who came with a great rattle to take the spoils. Mr Mally was third while the winner’s kennel mate Discover finished fourth.

Castle Callant was fifth and the final ticket went to  Denton Adonis.

The final race of the night was the All-In with a slip of four and it was won by Paul, Joanne, Lauren and Sophie’s Meadow Artisan ahead of John Lyon’s Black Eyed Shadow and Malcolm Holmes’ Sir Robert.

The final ticket went to Sarah White and Elsie Horn’s Malfunction.

Racing resumes tonight at St Helena for a three-grade meeting (Seniors, Pups, All-In). Seniors slip at 6pm.
