Aspatria in relegation play-off clash

Aspatria travel to Guisborough on Saturday for their relegation play-off clash to decide who stays in Regional 2 North.

Wigton are already down to Counties 1 Cumbria and their neighbours and long-time rivals will accompany them unless they can win in the North East.

The Black Reds have been rallying the troops ahead of this hugely important game and hopefully will be able to take the strongest possible squad.

It would be bad news for Cumbrian rugby if both clubs went down, as Penrith have also been demoted from Regional 1 North East to cap a disastrous season for the county.

Kirkby Lonsdale will be moving back up to Regional 2 North after clinching the Counties 1 Cumbria title at the weekend with a hard-earned 30-13 win at Cockermouth.

Hawcoat Park topped their best league season for a while with an 81-10 win at Creighton which clinched runners-up spot.

Carlisle finish third after their 36-29 win at Egremont while a cracking West Cumbrian derby saw  Whitehaven win 27-20 at Workington.

The season isn’t quite over for some of those teams as Saturday will see both semi-finals of the Cumbria League’s Shield Cup.

Cockermouth will entertain neighbours Keswick 2nds, with Martin Maughan in the middle while the other tie has St. Benedict’s at home to Hawcoat Park, refereed by Dan Shovelton.

The date for the final and the venue still has to be decided.
