A trial date has been set in the case of three men accused of attempted murder following an alleged stabbing at a house in Carlisle.

Alex Steventon, 46, Connor Challinor, 29, and Leon Ingledow, 21, appeared at the city’s crown court this morning.

All three stand accused of attempting to murder a man on Sunday, March 29.

Cumbria police previously said they became aware — at 3.24am that a man in his 30s had sustained a number of suspected stab wounds at an address in Edward Street, which runs parallel to London Road.

Officers made a number of arrests in the aftermath.

Steventon, Challinor and Ingledow all stand accused of attempted murder and appeared over separate video links at the crown court this morning.

During a hearing lasting less than 15 minutes, each man spoke to confirm his name and date of birth. No pleas were formally entered in the case.

Two defendants also face other charges in relation to the same incident on March 29.

Steventon and Challinor are accused of an alternative allegation of aggravated burglary: by entering an Edward Street address as trespassers and inflicting grievous bodily harm on the man while having a knife.

Both Steventon and Challinor face charges which allege that they were each in possession of a knife at Edward Street.

Steventon further stands accused of possessing cannabis, with intent to supply it to another, on the same date.

Challinor faces one additional charge arising out of a separate incident, on March 4 this year at Sybil Street in Carlisle, where he is alleged to have threatened a different man with a knife.

During today’s court hearing, a jury trial was fixed by Judge Nicholas Barker.

This is due to start at the crown court on October 6 this year and, it is estimated, will last around seven days.

Progress of the case will be assessed at two court hearings before then: first on May 14 and then on June 8, when it is believed that the three defendants will enter pleas to the charges they face.

In the meantime Steventon, of Denton Street; Challinor, of Sybil Street; and Ingledow, of Howe Street, all Carlisle, remain remanded in custody.
