The West Cumbria Mixed Triples League opened the 2026 season in exceptionally pleasant conditions for late April.
The defending champions, Maryport, came a cropper at Wigton, losing 7-2.
The other results were as follows: Whitehaven A 7 Whitehaven B 2; Vulcan Park B 4 Vulcan Park A 5; Harris Park A 4 Harris Park B 5; Workington B 2 Workington A 7; Croft 2 Cleator Moor 7; Egremont 5 Seascale 4.
In the West Cumbria Fours League only two of the five matches scheduled to be played on Friday actually took place.
Because many members of Workington were on a short tour to Middlesbrough the B team played their match at Cleator Moor earlier in the week, the result being 7-0 to the home side.
The postponed match between Fitz Park and Workington A is to be rearranged.
The scheduled match between Seaton and Whitehaven B was postponed because rain had rendered the green unplayable.
In the two matches which were played Whitehaven A defeated visitors Vulcan Park 7-0 and Harris Park won 7-0 at Maryport.
On Friday morning, there was a big turnout at St Michael’s Church, Lamplugh, for the funeral of Cyril Atkinson, 90.
For many years Cyril had been the secretary of both the leagues and was a great servant to bowls in Cumbria.
Many bowlers from his own club of Cleator Moor were in attendance.
