Workington play their first home game of the season tomorrow in the Cumbria League’s Premier Division.
A narrow defeat at Keswick was followed by a five-wicket win at Wigton and they now face a west Cumbrian derby with Whitehaven at the Ernest Valentine Ground.
But Workington will be without last week’s batting hero, opening bat and wicket-keeper Sam Bates who scored an unbeaten century.
It was described by one seasoned local cricket observer as one of the best knocks he had seen for a while.
Bates is unavailable tomorrow so veteran Calum Moffat, who stood in as a bowler last week, will take over behind the stumps.
A former county wicket-keeper, however, and a fine bat he will be a capable deputy.
Whitehaven still haven’t clearance for their new professional Sri Lankan Kevin Perera, and have booked Bacup’s South African professional Garnett Tarr as their sub pro for the game at Workington.
Whitehaven are one of three teams who have won both games so far to jointly lead the Premier Division table.
Keswick, who have had narrow victories over Workington and Furness, both at home travel to Edenside to take on league newcomers Carlisle 2nds who have lost both games so far.
Cockermouth are the third side with a 100% record so far and it’s a big game tomorrow, a trip to Furness who lost that tight game at Keswick last week.
Wigton and Dalton are still looking for their first victories, along with Carlisle 2nds.
Dalton, despite a fine effort by their professional Vaibhav Bhatt lost their all-out Cumbrian clash with Millom and tomorrow they travel to Cleator.
Wigton make the long trek to Millom hoping to get off the mark for the season.
