A campaign urging people with knowledge about serious crime connected to Appleby Horse Fair to come forward anonymously has been launched.
Independent charity Crimestoppers has launched the campaign encouraging anyone with information to pass it on.
Taking place early next month, Appleby Horse Fair marks its 250th anniversary this year and is the largest gathering of gypsies and travellers in Europe, attracting thousands of visitors to the Cumbrian town.
The fair is a significant cultural event, but Crimestoppers said as with any large-scale public event, however, there was the potential for crime.
It is urging people to share information such as serious crime in the planning, so that appropriate action can be taken.
Crimestoppers guarantees 100% anonymity and, in its 38-year history, the independent charity said it had never revealed the identity of anyone who had contacted it.
People can report information online using the charity’s reporting form or by calling the Crimestoppers freephone number 0800 555 11. In terms of your identity, there’s nothing to share because there’s nothing there.
Gary Murray, North West regional manager, said: “The 250th Appleby Horse Fair is an important and historic event, and most people attend to enjoy the fair safely and lawfully.
“Our campaign is about helping to keep everyone safe by encouraging information about any planned criminal activity to be passed on anonymously.
“Crimestoppers allows people to report what they know without giving their name.
“All information we receive is passed securely to law enforcement and relevant partners, including the RSPCA where animal welfare concerns are involved.”
