United Club B have won the Eric McMullen Handicap Trophy.

United Club B lifted the Derwent Valley Asbestos Removal and Demolition sponsored Eric McMullen Memorial Team Knockout Handicap Trophy.

They produced a disciplined and determined display to defeat Workington Golf Club 4–1 in the final at Maryport Social.

The opening frame saw Adam Sowden (+46) edge out Phil Sorfleet (+19) in a tense tactical battle. Sorfleet made the stronger start to the contest, potting confidently early on and compiling an excellent 24 break to quickly reduce the sizeable handicap deficit.

Sowden gradually settled into the frame, however, using strong safety play to regain control before eventually holding his nerve on the colours.

With the scores close late on, Sowden produced an excellent long pink to the middle pocket to seal a hard-fought 71–60 victory and hand United Club B the perfect start.

The Golf Club responded emphatically in frame two as Simon Frazer (+32) produced one of the standout performances of the evening against United B captain Stephen Jackson (+33).

Frazer controlled the frame throughout with the stronger all-round scoring, regularly converting the high colours to build momentum. Jackson was left requiring snookers going into the colours as Frazer completed a commanding 61–22 success to level the final at 1–1.

The first doubles frame proved to be a scrappy and tactical affair as Jackson and Stephen Harrison (combined handicap +34) took on the Golf Club pairing of Sorfleet and Frazer (+26).

With numerous colours finding safe positions, scoring opportunities were limited throughout and both pairs were forced into prolonged safety exchanges.

The Golf Club pair initially gained the upper hand, but United Club B gradually battled their way back into contention before eventually potting the crucial colours at the business end of the frame to secure a valuable 47–31 win and restore their advantage at 2–1.

United Club B tightened their grip on the trophy in frame four as Andrew Carter and David Petrie (+45) defeated Lewis Tilley and Mark Carruthers (+41) in another lengthy tactical doubles encounter.

Petrie proved crucial for the United side, producing some excellent scoring visits to establish an early 30-point lead.

The Golf Club pairing threatened a late recovery after scoring well from the final reds, but Petrie once again stepped up at the key moment with a series of composed pots to close out an impressive 54–23 victory and move United B to within one frame of the title.

The fifth frame between Shane Tallentire (+44) and Tilley (+40) delivered a dramatic finish worthy of a final.

Tallentire created the better scoring opportunities throughout much of the frame, while Tilley’s superb long potting repeatedly kept the Golf Club hopes alive, converting seven from eight long pots during the contest.

However, missed opportunities on the colours prevented Tilley from fully capitalising and the frame eventually went all the way to the black.

With both players under immense pressure and the cue ball tight to the yellow pocket, Tallentire produced a superb long black into the opposite corner to clinch a thrilling 66–55 victory and seal the trophy for United Club B with a 4–1 final scoreline.
