Work has started to repair Barrow’s Thorncliffe Crematorium in Barrow following a fire.
The blaze, in March, caused significant damage to the building and extensive repairs are needed, including to the roof and building’s structure.
Westmorland & Furness Council said it had also agreed to invest in upgrading and improving Thorncliffe’s cremators and associated systems.
Investigations have been carried out on site to understand the extent of the damage, carry out structural and electrical surveys.
The council said it had continued to update funeral directors to help support affected families and help them to make arrangements during the disruption.
Chapel‑based services were able to resume from April 15, allowing families to continue to hold ceremonies at Thorncliffe as planned.
Repair work is expected to take several weeks and the council said it was hoped cremations would be able to resume from late July or early August.
