Football leagues start to wrap up

It’s been a largely disappointing season for the Whitehaven club in the West Lancashire League and the Cumberland County League.

The first team finished bottom of the West Lancs and will be relegated while the reserves were fifth in the 10-strong County League Division One.

But it has ended with a trophy for the club cabinet as the reserves lifted the County League Cup for Tier 2 clubs.

In Saturday’s final at the Falcon Complex, Egremont a goal in each half gave Whitehaven a 2-0 win over Unisun Youth Development.

Joe Martin and Nathan McGlennon were the goal-scorers and it was clearly a welcome boost to the club, who are looking to a more positive season next time round.

The first team, bottom of the league for almost all of the season, revived under new boss Brian Dawson and an unbeaten run before the last game almost took them above Coppull United and off the bottom.

The County League Premier Division and Division One fixtures have been completed now and it was a splendid finale for Keswick.

Although facing relegation from the Premier Division, and beaten in the semi-final of the League Cup tier one, they ended the campaign with an excellent 4-0 win over Workington Juniors.

They had led with a 25th minute goal from Luke Mason and went on to add further goals from Mason (60), Alfie West (70) and a first senior goal from 16-year-old Charlie White (85).

Trailing at the break Aspatria came back to draw 1-1 with Whitehaven Miners in their final league game.

Shaun Smith scored the Aspatria equaliser after Braydon Walmsley had given the visitors the lead.

Wigton Harriers were beaten 5-1 at Mirehouse after the West Cumbrians had established a 3-0 interval lead.

Keenan Mackay grabbed a hat-trick for the hosts and was joined on the scoresheet by Callum Wilson and Liam Elliot. Luke Blackburn was the Wigton scorer.

This Saturday the Tier 1 League Cup final is being played at the Falcon Complex between Aspatria and Cleator Moor Celtic reserves (ko 2pm).

The League Cup contested by the top sides in the Premier Division is for the Ken Glover Memorial Memorial Trophy and the top two teams have made it to the final on Wednesday, May 20 – Unisun Athletic v Maryport – also at the Falcon Complex.

The season concludes on Wednesday May 23 with the Whitehaven Cup final, participants still to be determined.
