Club captain Niall Canavan is among six players who will be leaving Barrow after the Bluebirds confirmed the club’s retained and released list.

Goalkeeper Wyll Stanway has had his one-year extension option exercised by the club, and five loan players have returned to their parent clubs.

Canavan leaves after four-and-a-half seasons at Holker Streets and as captain led the club to its best two league finishes since promotion back into the Football League following a 48-year hiatus.

Totalling over 180 appearances for the Bluebirds, Canavan has been a key member of the playing squad across the past four years.

The popular midfielder Sam Foley also departs after four seasons in which he also also filled in across the backline.

He made 138 appearances for the club and, alongside Canavan played a key role in the successful 2022/23 and 2023/24 campaigns.

Foley also had the unique task at the end this season of balancing playing and coaching duties in difficult circumstances and was unable to keep the team in League Two.

Connor Mahoney leaves after 72 appearances and seven goals over two seasons in Cumbria while Tyler Walker and Kane Hemmings also depart

Angus MacDonald will also leave the club after the conclusion of his short-term deal.
