Workington’s new Cumberland Sports Village has been given the go-ahead by councillors.
The new sports village will be the home of Workington Reds football team and Workington Town rugby club.
Built on the site of Reds’ existing Borough Park ground, it would have capacity for up to 5,000 people and see a new 3G community pitch created.
All the terraces will be replaced and Cumberland Council said it was likely all the work would be carried out at the same time.
Originally earmarked to be open in July 2027, last month it was revealed the scheme would be project managed and delivered by Cumberland Council and a new timetable for work and opening would be produced.
The application considered by Cumberland Council’s planning committee today, Wednesday May 27, was submitted by Cumberland Sports Village Ltd.
The project is supported by the Government Town Deal, Cumberland Council and Football Foundation.
Leader of Cumberland Council Mark Fryer said: “The project presents a fantastic opportunity to create a modern, fit-for-purpose stadium facility for both Workington AFC and Workington Town RLFC.
“As well as sport, the stadium would also act as a focal point for both the community and businesses within the area.
“An improved hospitality offer means the stadium could also be used for meetings, conferences, functions, events and community activities.”
Cumberland Counci said a design team was in the process of enhancing the existing scheme and a new programme of work and updated timeframes is being produced.
Plans for the new community pitch are also being drawn together.
The community pitch will be undertaken by the Football Foundation.
