Automation plans at Carlisle’s Pirelli factory have sparked fears over staff redundancies.

The company said it is planning to implement an automation project at the factory, but did not provide any details on what it would involve.

Rumours of up to 80 possible redundancies have circulated as a result of the plans.

Pirelli said the project is being managed in close coordination with both trade unions and employees.

Unite said it is working with the company to mitigate any potential redundancies due to automation.

A Pirelli UK spokesman said: “As part of the continuous upgrading and competitive enhancement of its UK operations, Pirelli is currently implementing an automation project at its Carlisle factory.

“This initiative forms part of a broader investment program aimed at strengthening efficiency and long-term competitiveness and is fully embedded within the company’s wider innovation roadmap.

“The project is being managed in close coordination with both trade unions and employees, including alignment on implementation timelines.

“Pirelli is committed to constant process innovation and the highest level of product quality and customer service, while maintaining high safety standards.

“This is the key to the business’s sustainability globally and in the UK.”
