A collision involving four vehicles has closed the A689 in both directions.
It happened at around 9.20am and emergency services attended.
Four people have since been taken to hospital and two have serious injuries.
The road closure remains in place between junction 44 to Houghton.
Cumbria Police are still asking people to avoid the area.
