Plans for 70 new homes in West Cumbria have been given the go-ahead.
John Swift Homes wants to create the development in the Moor Row area.
The 8.36 hectare site is bounded by the residential development of Summergrove Park to the north; West Lakes Science Park to the south; Summergrove Hall and agricultural land to the west; and, the disused Galemire Quarry, agricultural land and Dalzell Street to the east.
The site includes an area of greenfield land, currently used for agricultural grazing purposes and two parcels of land separated and enclosed by mature planting.
Cumberland Council’s planning committee unanimously approved the proposal when they met on Wednesday.
Fifteen objections were lodged with the council.
Objectors to the scheme said they were concerned over traffic safety in the area, including that that Dalzell Street was an established rat-run with a history of accidents.
Resident Norma Charters asked for traffic calming measures to be introduced.
However, a council highways officer said that while the perception may be that the roads were unsafe, in reality they were not.
Cllr Roger Dobson (Corby and Hayton, Lib Dems) asked if the developer had proposed including swift bricks in the properties he was told that it could be imposed via a planning condition.
Cllr Dobson proposed that they approved the planning application, which was seconded by Cllr Tony Markley (Solway Coast, Conservative) and, when it was put to the vote, it was unanimously approved.
Twenty-two of the homes would be two-bedroom and 48 would be three-bedroom.
It was recommended that the application is granted subject to conditions including that 10 per cent of the homes meet the definition of ‘affordable housing, discount sale’ which is capped at 80 per cent of the open market value.
