A World’s Biggest Liar competition will be held in West Cumbria next month.
It has been revealed as the finale of a comedy festival at Rosehill Theatre, near Whitehaven, on July 11.
The theatre has teamed up with Cockermouth’s Jennings Brewery to host the competition, which invites people to take to the stage and compete to tell the most believable fibs.
Three selected contestants will go head-to-head, each performing a five-minute routine after which a panel of judges will then question each contestant.
Politicians and solicitors are excluded.
The competition will conclude with a live reveal and crowning of the World’s Biggest Liar, with the winner receiving a case of Jennings beer and a trophy.
Runners-up will receive eight bottles of Jennings’ beers.
West Cumbria is the home of the original World’s Biggest Liar competition, with the competition traditionally taking place at the Bridge Inn in Santon Bridge each November.
Attracting competitors from around the world, it dates back to the 19th century – the pub landlord Will Ritson (1808-1890) was renowned locally for his tall tales.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the person who has won the competition the most is John Graham, of Silloth.
