People can take part in regular Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling training sessions in Egremont.
The Cumberland & Westmorland Wrestling Association has begun the community development project CWWA 2026 – Physical Activity, Strength & Fitness, thanks to funding from the Sport England Movement Fund.
The association wants to create the opportunity for people – particularly youngsters – to take part in structured physical activity while learning the traditional sport of Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling.
The programme aims to increase participation in physical activity while developing strength, fitness, confidence and resilience among participants.
Through regular coaching sessions and community engagement, the project aims to provide a safe and welcoming environment where people can learn new skills, develop discipline and teamwork, and build positive relationships with coaches and peers.
Thanks to support from David Allen, Cumbria’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, the association will be able to buy modern wrestling strips – T-shirts and shorts – for new recruits.
The association said: “The strips will be produced in a distinctive rust colour, reflecting the historic Rust Men associated with Florence Mine.
“This design choice celebrates the industrial heritage of the local area and connects the project with the community’s identity.
“Interest in developing wrestling activity in Egremont was further inspired by the WRESTLE Art Exhibition, curated by artist Janet Moss, which highlighted the cultural significance of Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling and its connection to the local community.”
Training sessions are held at the Falcon Club, Egremont on Tuesdays from 6.30pm to 8pm.
