Work has been postponed at Haverigg Railway Bridge.
Cumberland Council has clarified the situation after a temporary traffic regulation order was published recently, which had caused confusion.
It said during the time the order had been submitted, further surveys identified some existing telecommunications infrastructure needed to be rediverted.
It means that the work cannot go ahead while BT plans its work to redivert the service.
Cumberland Council added: “As a result, work previously expected to begin in mid-June, including any associated road closure, will not be taking place as indicated.
“We will continue to review options and will keep residents informed as plans progress.
“Should work go ahead in future, we will ensure that residents receive clear advance notice, including at least two weeks’ notice of any road closure.”
