This year’s Appleby Horse Fair is drawing to a close and the clean-up operation has begun.
The fair’s Multi Agency Strategic Co-ordinating Group said it was now well into the final stages, with Gypsies and Travellers beginning their journey to their next destinations.
It said: “Our cleaning teams are out in force in Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and outlying areas, picking up litter and sweeping the streets in the final, post-fair, clean up.
“We hope to have this work completed by the end of the week.”
A post-fair community drop-in event will be held on Wednesday, June 17, at Appleby Public Hall.
It begins at 5pm.
Opening speakers will be Claire Notman, chair of the Multi Agency Strategic Co-ordinating Group, and Detective Superintendent Dan St Quintin, of Cumbria Constabulary, Appleby Horse Fair Police Gold Command.
Following this there will be an opportunity for people to speak directly with Claire, Dan and officers from Westmorland and Furness Council, Appleby Town Council, Cumbria Constabulary, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service and other MASCG representatives.
The group said: “These discussions are an opportunity for you to share your experiences of the fair, any suggestions you have for positive change, and to ask any specific questions that you may have.”
The event will finish at 8pm.
