Police said they were aware of social media posts circulating in Carlisle regarding an incident near a primary school in Currock.
Officers confirmed they received a report shortly before noon on Friday that a man had attempted to approach a child of primary school age on their way to school at around 8.30am.
Cumbria police said they attended the school and have spoken with the child and staff.
A spokesman added: “Enquiries have been completed, a local, white British male has been identified, and no offences have been disclosed.
“We are aware that some descriptions being shared on social media of the suspect and the circumstances of the incident are inaccurate.
“We understand this type of report can cause concern in the community but would always urge people not to speculate on social media during enquiries so as not to impede any enquiries or cause further concern in the community.
“We’d like to reassure members of public that incidents like this are treated seriously and are thoroughly investigated.”
