The A66 will be closed overnight from Penrith to Temple Sowerby from today until Friday.

National Highways is strengthening the road underneath the central reservation between M6 junction 40 and Kemplay Bank roundabout at Penrith.

The A66 will be closed in both directions from Kemplay Bank roundabout to Temple Sowerby from midnight to 6am from Monday June 15 to Friday June 19.

It is part of the wider A66 Northern Transpennine scheme and National Highways said this work would allow it to keep two lanes running in each direction during main construction.

It said it would also install CCTV cameras along the A66 between M6 junction 40 and Temple Sowerby bypass to monitor traffic so it could respond quickly to incidents or breakdowns.

Upcoming closures

  • A66 between M6 junction 40 and Kemplay Bank roundabout  – from 7pm on Friday June 19 to  6am on Monday June 22, one lane running in both directions, including both roundabouts and approaches.
  • A66 in both directions between M6 junction 40 and Kemplay Bank roundabout will be closed from midnight to 6am on Sunday June 21.
  • A66 between M6 junction 40 and Kemplay Bank roundabout – from 7pm on Friday June 26 to 6am on Monday June 29, one lane running in both directions, including both roundabouts and approaches.

Signed diversion routes will be in place.

Due to existing HGV restrictions in the area, HGV diversion routes will use the M6, A69 and A1.

Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles at all times.
