The Derwent Valley Asbestos Removals Summer League saw action start in the handicapped cup competition.
The first round robin group qualifying matches got underway.
In Group A Mark Suitor (+29) made an impressive start overcoming the in-form Mark Cowen (+30).
The opening frame set the tone for a closely fought evening, with Cowen edging home on the final black.
Suitor responded immediately to promptly bring the match back on parity with a comfortable win in the second. Suitor built on the momentum shift taking the third to move into a 2-1 match lead.
For the second time in the evening the final black was to prove the decisive factor in the fourth. Despite a resilient display from Cowen it was Suitor who managed to come through and hold on to the momentum and snuff-out any chance of a comeback.
Suitor, now buoyed with confidence, quickly closed out the contest to complete a deserved 4–1 triumph.
Kevin Basnett (Scr) produced a commanding performance, securing an emphatic 5–0 victory over Andrew Carter (+40). Basnett set the tone early by taking the opening frame, aided by a break of 33.
The momentum continued in frame two as Basnett delivered breaks of 35 and 47 on the way to another convincing success.
Frame three brought more quality scoring, with contributions of 40 and 30 helping Basnett to victory and a commanding 3–0 advantage.
The stand-out moment arrived in frame four when Basnett was on the cusp of a magical moment after depositing nine reds and 9 blacks.
The tenth red proved elusive, but the 72 break was enough to secure the frame and extend the match lead.
Despite Carter offering stronger resistance in the final frame, Basnett completed the clean sweep aided by a further contribution of 38.
In the final Group A match Peter O’Hagan (+5) secured a 4–1 win over Mark Tunstall (+19) in a highly competitive encounter featuring a number of close frames.
O’Hagan made the brighter start, taking the opening frame narrowly to gain an early advantage.
O’Hagan then moved into a 2-0 lead after edging another closely fought frame. O’Hagan continued to build upon his momentum in the third, crafting a break of 33 to put the match beyond reach at 3-0.
The fourth frame found both players locked in another tight battle again. This time Tunstall held his nerve to snatch a narrow victory and secure what may prove to be a valuable point.
Any hopes of a late comeback were extinguished in the final frame as O’Hagan completed the job with his most convincing performance to seal an excellent start in his knockout campaign with a 4–1 triumph.
In Group B, Stephen Jackson (+28) produced an impressive performance to secure a 4–1 victory over Craig Wilkinson (+40).
Wilkinson made the brighter start to the contest and edged the opening frame to put early pressure on his opponent.
However, Jackson quickly found his rhythm and started to produce the type of form that took him to the final last year.
A solid performance in frame two saw Jackson level the match, before moving ahead with another accomplished display in frame three.
With momentum firmly on his side, Jackson delivered his strongest performance of the evening in frame four, with a dominant victory to guarantee match victory.
There was no way back for Wilkinson in the final frame as Jackson completed the job in style, to wrap up a convincing 4–1 triumph and make an early statement of his title aspirations.
Adam Sowden (+36) delivered a dominant display to record a comprehensive 5–0 victory over Andrew Carruthers (+36)and establish himself at the top of the Group B table.

From the opening frame, Sowden was firmly in control, establishing an early advantage with a comfortable win. Sowden continued to dictate proceedings in frame two, extending his lead with a convincing display.
Any hopes of a Carruthers comeback were quickly extinguished in the third frame as Sowden produced another assured performance.
The pattern continued in the fourth frame, with Sowden maintaining his consistency to stretch his lead to 4-0.
Carruthers showed some resilience in the final frame, but Sowden showed no signs of easing off and completed the whitewash in dramatic fashion on the final black to round off a perfect start to his cup campaign.
The third Group B encounter of the week saw a much closer contest as Stephen Harrison (+36) narrowly overcome Ryan Ismay (+9) by three frames to two.
Harrison made the most of his notable handicap advantage, making a flying start by taking the opening two frames convincingly to leave Ismay facing an uphill battle.
Ismay responded in style in the third frame compiling breaks of 33 and 34 on the way to reducing the deficit. The fourth frame proved to be the tightest of the evening.
With both players trading chances throughout, it was Harrison who edged a tense finish to deny Ismay the chance of a deciding frame.
Ismay refused to surrender and used his scoring power to claim the final frame and restrict Harrison to a 3-2 overall victory.
