A family have been rescued after getting stuck on steep and technical ground in the Lake District.

Cockermouth Mountain Rescue team were called out on Saturday at around 2.45pm to Sour Milk Gill near Buttermere.

The family had been walking in Buttermere and had taken the steep trod alongside the gill.

They quickly found themselves on steep, technical ground and were unable to continue.

A limited call out took place to find the family and escort them safely off the fell.

Two team members were already in the valley and quickly located the party. In the meantime a team vehicle headed down the valley to assist.

Due to the nature of the ground, the easiest route to safety was to ascend 200m and join the main path up to Red Pike and escort the family down to the lake shore.

The incident lasted 1.5 hours and involved 16 team members.
