The Edge in Whitehaven has won a prestigious North West accolade.
The coastal activities centre on Whitehaven Harbour, won the Excellence in Planning for a Successful Economy category at the North West Awards for Planning Excellence 2026.
The category recognises projects that make a significant contribution to economic prosperity and celebrates outstanding work across regeneration, commercial development, infrastructure and public realm improvements.
The Edge was also shortlisted in the Excellence in Planning for Heritage and Culture category.
The Edge was funded by Sellafield Ltd through its SiX (Social Impact Multiplied) fund and the Coastal Communities Fund, with Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners leading the development.
Cumberland Council submitted the project for the awards in recognition of its role in supporting economic growth, attracting visitors and creating new opportunities for the local community through the planning system.
The judges described The Edge as a bold and distinctive waterfront development that delivers clear community and placemaking benefits, supported by proactive and collaborative engagement from an early stage.
They highlighted how the scheme enhances local distinctiveness, encourages outdoor activity and community use, and makes a strong contribution to the vitality of the harbour area.
They also recognised its innovative business model, which helps secure the long-term viability of the facility while enabling leisure provision to be subsidised for the wider community.
