BT is facing a court bill of over £24,000 after it failed to make sure that it carried out safe roadworks.

The firm was prosecuted by Cumberland Council and BT admitted four offences.

It was fined a total £18,000 plus costs – with a total bill of £24,182.99 – at Workington Magistrates Court last month.

It was fined £4,000 for work at High Hill in Keswick, £4,000 for work at Kirksanton, £6,000 for work at Main Road in High Harrington, near Workington and £4,000 for work at St George’s Road in Millom.

The offences relate to failures to properly sign, light and guard work on the road, which are legal requirements.
