Parents and carers from across West Cumbria are invited to a meeting to discuss the challenges of children growing up online.
The meeting, hosted by Whitehaven and Workington MP and Children’s Minister Josh MacAlister, will take place on Friday, July 3, from 6pm to 7pm at the Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre in Workington.
It comes after the Government announced a ban on social media for under-16s.
The event will also mark the launch of West Cumbria’s Parent and Teacher Pact – a pioneering new initiative to help parents and schools work together as children move into secondary education.
From September, every family with a child starting Year 7 or joining Energy Coast UTC at Lillyhall, Mayfield School in Whitehaven or Branthwaite Academy, near Workington, will be offered free access to parenting programme Triple P.
Triple P offers practical support on modern parenting challenges, including screen time, online safety, emotional wellbeing and building positive family relationships.
The Parent and Teacher Pact has been secured by Mr MacAlister with the support of Sellafield Ltd and the 80/20 Fund and it will be delivered locally by Howgill Family Centre and the WELL Project.
Mr MacAlister said: “Parents have been telling me they want practical help navigating the challenges of raising children in a digital world. That’s exactly what the Parent and Teacher Pact is about.
“I’d encourage any parent or carer interested in the new social media ban, or in how we help children thrive online, to come along on July 3. I want West Cumbria’s voice to help shape this national conversation.”
The meeting is free to attend and open to all but registration is required.
