Holker Chilli Fest – Chilli eating competition

[T]his weekend’s damp weather didn’t affect the fiery fun at Holker with a full house for the chilli eating competitions hosted by Darth Naga.  A packed Courtyard watched on as 10 competitors (on each day) took part in the lively competition.

Saturday’s competition was the most entertaining yet with Darth commenting it was best one he had ever hosted – humorous contestants were encouraged by the lively crowd – with Jordan from Barrow taking centre stage.  Joint winners took the trophy on Saturday and Ed Duffy was crowned Sunday’s winner after reaching around 250,000 scovilles.

Plenty of fiery food was enjoyed across the two days including spicy nachos, sauces, jams, chilli chocolate and even cheeses.   A wide variety of chilli plants were also available with keen gardeners taking home some new varieties to try growing their own chillies.

Jillian Rouse, Head of Visitor Services said: “We’ve had a great weekend with such a fantastic atmosphere and 2,500 people coming through the gates.  The chilli eating competition with Darth Naga and food demos by the lovely Gary McClure were very well attended and the entertainment from Ulpha590, Freda the Dinner Lady and fire-eating and stilt walking from Andy Jester proved very popular.  We already have some new ideas in the pipe line for next year, our fifth Chilli Fest.”
