[M]ichael Guest, a Copeland Borough Councillor and Whitehaven Town Councillor, was invited to a meeting with Copeland Borough Council to discuss a statement made on social media that contained serious allegations.

In an alleged Facebook post dated July 14, Councillor Guest claimed: “Corruption in Copeland is endemic… politics in Copeland is about corruption and self-interest.”

A spokesman for Copeland Council said: “The meeting between Councillor Guest and Copeland Borough Council’s Director of Finance and its Internal Audit Manager took place on September 13. Its purpose was to allow Councillor Guest to provide evidence to support his allegations.

“The outcome of the meeting was that Councillor Guest could provide no evidence to support his allegation of corruption relating to Copeland Borough Council nor Whitehaven Town Council.”

Following the meeting, Councillor Guest said: “I have no evidence of corruption within Copeland Borough Council or Whitehaven Town Council.”

Councillor Guest was asked to respond to the allegation but declined to comment.
