[T]he University of Cumbria fanfare written by Professor Richard McGregor signalled the start of the latest event to mark the university’s tenth anniversary year (Thurs 28.)

The magnificent setting of Carlisle Cathedral played host to the anniversary service attended by students, staff and supporters of the university. The location is familiar as a venue for the twice yearly graduation ceremonies.

“Today offers us an opportunity to reflect on the past with considerable pride and importantly to look forward to the future with confidence and optimism,” Vice Chancellor Prof Julie Mennell told guests. “Building on the foundations laid by our legacy institutions, then reinforced by ten years of growth as a university, and with a new and dynamic strategic plan in place we are ready to position ourselves as a vibrant university. We will be a catalyst for change, recognised for our outstanding student outcomes and the significant impact we have on the Cumbria and North Lancashire regions and beyond.”

A performance by the university’s choir, Voces UoC, conducted and arranged by professor of practice Graeme Danby provided a musical interlude.

The university’s chaplain, Rev Alexandra Logan, gave a sermon in which she highlighted how ‘embedded’ the university is in communities from Cumbria to east London.

An ornate steel tree, designed by University of Cumbria alumnus and sculpture technician Kenneth Waters, was unveiled to represent the university’s growth and development over the last decade and illustrate the range of academic courses delivered across all campuses.

“Like all staff at the university, I feel a great affection for and pride in the University of Cumbria, its staff and students,” Prof Mennell said and went on to pass on her on her appreciation to past and present members of the university. “We are ambitious for our future as a university of and for the region. With the support of a talented and committed workforce, the university can now embark on its second decade with increased confidence and in anticipation of an enhanced reputation and continued success.”
