Cumbria County Council named as Carer Friendly Employer

[I]n support of Carers Rights Day a ‘Put the Kettle on’ tea party took place in The Old Town Hall in Carlisle City Centre on Friday 24 November.  Volunteers and Support Workers from Adults and Young Carers were on hand offering teas, cake, advice and support.

In recognition of providing support for Working Carers, Cumbria County Council is being accredited by Carlisle Carers, in partnership with West Cumbria Carers and Eden Carers, as a Carer Friendly Employer as part of their Big Lottery funded project, Employers Support Working Carers.

Chairman of Cumbria County Council, Councillor John Bell attended the event to receive the accreditation on behalf of the council.

He said: “It is estimated that one in nine people are balancing work with providing unpaid care or support to someone who wouldn’t be able to cope without their help. By recognising the needs of carers, we aim to hold on to experienced staff and create a supportive working environment.

“Without proper advice and support employees may find they cannot cope, have health issues and even leave work, but appropriate intervention and support can help carers balance paid employment with their caring responsibilities.”

There are five carers support groups throughout Cumbria based in different areas of the county.  Each group is responsible for the support of carers in their particular catchment area.
