Ruth Alcroft, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Carlisle with Labour Party Members at tonight’s selection meeting

[R]uth Alcroft has been selected as Labour’s parliamentary candidate for the Carlisle constituency to stand in the next general election.

Previously a teacher Ruth is now director of a local social enterprise, Susan’s Farm, which provides educational programmes to children, vulnerable adults and people with mental health difficulties.

She lives in Carlisle with her husband and two young children. She is a local councillor in Carlisle and has worked hard to represent local people.

Speaking after the selection, Ruth said: “I’m delighted to have been selected as the candidate for Carlisle. It is a real honour and I’m humbled that local members have put their faith in me.

“We don’t know when the next general election will be but I will be working hard until then getting our message out to voters so that Labour can win in Carlisle.

“As a local councillor I see the worst impacts of Tory policies on people who are affected by rising poverty, low wages and insecure housing.  I want to see a Labour Government which will make a positive difference on people’s lives.”

Elsie Martlew, Chair of Carlisle Labour Party, added: “I’m pleased that Ruth has been selected as our candidate and know that she will make a great representative for Carlisle.

“People here have suffered from years of Tory austerity and cuts while the north south divide has widened.  Carlisle has lacked a strong voice in Parliament for the past seven years and Ruth will be that strong voice.

“We have lots of work to do now getting out talking to voters and I’m looking forward to working with Ruth.”
