[P]enrith AFC made it into the Lancashire League Cup quarter final after a great display at the UCLan arena against Sir Tom Finney Reserves. A team 2 divisions higher, in the Lancashire Womens Premiere division.
The game finally got played, having lost out to the weather on the previous 4 attempts.
Penrith played with an attacking formation, and were immediately on the front foot. Twice the ball through to the pacey Rebecca Buchanon almost made it, but the Finney’s just managed to get something on it and cut out the pass. On the 3rd attempt the ball got through and Buchanon raced clear of the defence to calmly slot home.
Finneys then had a good spell of pressure. Chelsea Tracey pulling off a great save in the Penrith goal, then shortly after It looked like Sir tom Finneys had equalised, only for the goal to be ruled out for off side. The remainder of the 1st half was fairly even. Both teams playing great football. Penrith defence was really strong though, and were attacking with real purpose. Becca Alderson was a handful throughout and it was her pass to Buchanon who’s shot hit the inside of the post and rebounded across the goal. Zoe Glendinning was 1st to react and couldn’t miss from just a couple of yards out.
Half Time 0-2
In the second half Sir Tom Finneys came out in real determined fashion. They were pushing higher up the pitch and had plenty of possession in the Penrith half, but once again the Penrith defence was solid and dealt with everything Finneys had to offer. Penrith were happy to counter attack and looked really dangerous at this. Midway through the second half Bobbi Noble neatly finished with her left foot after a great passing move, making it 0-3.
Finally with the clock ticking down and Sir Tom Finneys players looking exhausted. A long ball from Penrith keeper Tracey cleared the Finney defence, for Glendinning to run onto and slot home to make it 0-4.
A really pleasing display. Very solid display at the back and attacking with real purpose. Calm finishing made it a comfortable score line. But Sir Tom Finneys were a good team and played plenty of good football throughout.
