Year 7 Football Team Celebrating their win against Manchester Grammar

[S]t Benedict’s students are continuing their impressive run in the English Schools’ Football (ESFA) National Cup, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams both winning their matches last week.

Both U13 teams are now through to the final 16 in the competition, and are the only Cumbrian teams left still competing.

The boys’ team played late last week, and beat Manchester Grammar School in another tough match. St Benedict’s showed great fitness levels and determination to wrap up victory in the final five minutes with a cross and headed goal to win it 3-2 and progress to the last 16 nationally.

Mr Harrison, PE Teacher and coach for the boys comments: “What a fantastic effort from the boys. They have worked hard all year and have won every game thus far which is a credit to their ability. They constantly show a great work ethic and never give up. What a fantastic achievement to reach the last 16 schools nationally and be playing for a place in the quarter finals next up.”

The girls’ team had an impressive win against Fred Longworth School from Manchester, winning 4-1 after a hard fought match. Leanna Giles was named player of the match after scoring a hat trick to help secure the St Benedict’s win.

Year 7 Girls Team from St Benedict’s School

Miss Powe, Head of PE at St Benedict’s, comments: “As Head of PE, I am extremely proud of the young students’ performances. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams have displayed huge levels of determination and commitment throughout each round of the competition. They have a ‘never give up’ attitude and brilliant team spirit.”

“The players are a fantastic credit to our school, their parents and above all themselves. We thank our parents for their outstanding support and look forward to the next round with confidence.”

The teams will play the next round of games shortly, with the girls playing Weatherhead High School from the Wirral, and the boys drawn to play Valley Gardens Middle School from Newcastle.
