[P]olice Scotland is warning motorists parked on the Whitesands in Dumfries to attend and remove vehicles from the car parks in that area due to a flood warning being received.

The Whitesands are expected to flood at around 1445 hours today (Tuesday 23 January 2018).

Inspector Hugh McCombe said: “We have closed the west car park at present and would ask motorists to attend and remove vehicles as soon as possible. Vehicles still in situ after 1415 hours may be removed by a local garage. Motorists are also asked to avoid the area where possible until further notice.”

Update at 3:33pm

Police Scotland report that the Whitesands is now flooding in Dumfries and as such arrangements are being made to close the roadway there.

Inspector Hugh McCombe said: “Flood water is now encroaching onto the roadway and the car parks are almost empty. We are going to have to close the Whitesands and diversions are being put in place. I would ask motorists to avoid the area and for their patience, as this will cause congestion across the town.”
