Prosecco Soccer Rolled Out Across Cumbria

[F]ollowing a successful pilot in West Cumbria, Cumberland FA is pleased to announce that it has expanded its Prosecco Soccer initiative, which aims to get female players of all abilities involved in the game.

Over the last year the recreational kickabout session has welcomed over 30 new female players into the game – all coming together for a fun and friendly, social game of five-a-side football before enjoying a well-deserved glass of Prosecco in the clubhouse.

One Centre, running at Egremont Rugby Union Football Club every Friday between 7pm and 8pm, is already underway, priced at just £3 per person. Meanwhile, brand-new sessions at University of Cumbria will begin on Friday 16 February, taking place every other Friday from 6pm to 7pm, priced at just £2 per person but free for university students.

Sessions are open to females over the age of 18, whether they’ve played football before or are completely new to the game. It’s a perfect way to socialise, keep fit and make new friends whilst trying a new sport.

Cumberland FA is proud to be supporting each Centre with a welcome pack, including footballs, bibs, goalkeeper gloves and Prosecco, with each member also receiving a loyalty card. Those who attend five sessions will receive a free Prosecco Soccer t-shirt, whilst those who attend 10 receive a free pass for a future session.

Jess Nelson, Football Development Officer at Cumberland FA, said: “We’re really pleased with how the pilot has gone over the last year in West Cumbria and the growth in the number of women keen to get playing has been brilliant to see. We’re really excited to be working with the University of Cumbria for our first Centre in Carlisle which kicks off next month and we’re confident the programme will be just as popular.”

Andy Keir, Sports Centre Manager at University of Cumbria Active, said: “UoC Active is all about making sport and exercise as inclusive as possible. It encompasses all of the sporting opportunities here at the University of Cumbria, including our Students’ Union sports clubs, grassroots activities, continuing professional development courses and community activities.

“Prosecco Soccer is a brilliant initiative that gets women involved in football and we are looking forward to hosting these sessions in the Carlisle area to support our female students and wider community.”

If anyone wishes to get involved in Prosecco Soccer or develop a Centre of their own, please contact Jess Nelson via [email protected] or 01900 872310.
