[E]GREMONT has benefited from a successful community clean-up event.

More than 30 bags of rubbish were collected during the two-hour blitz, with volunteers targeting a number of areas of town, with the vicinities of West Lakes Academy, Market Hall and Falcon Club receiving attention.

The event involved representatives of Egremont Town Council, Calderwood House, Works 4 You and a team from the town’s Co-Op store.

It was supported by Copeland Borough Council, which supplied equipment to the litter-pickers and collected the full bags afterwards. The council, which is running its Pride of Place community campaign, also carried out some concentrated street-cleansing and enforcement activity in the vicinity.

Lena Hogg, Chair of Egremont Town Council, said: “It was great to see the community come together to support this clean-up.

“It’s a regular event, organised through the town council, and we enjoy the support from all corners of the community.

“We’re privileged to live in a beautiful part of the world and we should all be doing all we can to keep it that way. That’s why we’re delighted to support Copeland Council’s Pride of Place campaign.”

Miss Cumbria finalist and Egremont resident Brooke Drummond

One of those joining the litter-pickers was Miss Cumbria finalist Brooke Drummond, 20, from Egremont. She said: “It’s important that people put something back into their community.”

The group’s next litter-pick takes place on April 6 and those who would like to take part are asked to meet at the Market Hall at 10am.
